F1 – Mclaren and Red Bull are planning to appeal while Mercedes have taken legal advice after Formula One stewards accepted a timing error and reinstated Alpine driver Pierre Gasly to the Monaco Grand Prix podium yesterday, five days after the event.
Frenchman Gasly had finished third at the chequered flag but was demoted to seventh before the podium celebrations after two five-second penalties for pitlane speeding were added to his total time.
Formula One, responsible for the timekeeping, admitted to a “measurement discrepancy” resulting from pitlane changes and stewards rescinded Gasly’s penalties after a virtual hearing at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix following Renault-owned Alpine’s request for review.
Champions McLaren, one of several teams set to lose points as a result of the about-turn, said they had presented an intention to appeal.
Red Bull, who had Isack Hadjar demoted from third to fourth as a result, planned to do the same.
Gasly was adamant on Sunday that he had not been speeding and said he was heartbroken by the penalties.
