Iran’s desperate attempt to block the Strait of Hormuz if its oil export is hampered is a childish ploy and will backfire with serious repercussions to the country.
Above all, the Strait of Hormuz is an international oil conduit where millions of barrels of oil are transported on a daily basis for its consumption throughout the world. Any attempt to disrupt that trade route is likely to have international impact and Iran will face worldwide condemnation and further measures that can choke its economy.
The unfortunate events that are unfolding in Iran is the result of the myopic foreign policy the regime is following. Its controversial nuclear agreement, the missile development programme and above all its interference in the internal affairs of other countries by supporting terrorist elements to destabilise them, including Bahrain, has put Iran in hot water.
There is now new development coming out of Iran to the chagrin of the Ayatollahs. People have started to protest openly against the government due to the declining economic situation which has sent shock waves among the political elites of the country.
Currently, the country is in a critical political crisis never seen in its history. It finds itself sandwiched between internal protests and external economic sanctions, which are getting tighter and tighter every other day with several international companies stopping doing business in the country. Amid these realities, the Ayatollahs haven’t changed their stance. They continue to support proxy militias in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and terrorist outfits in Bahrain. They continue to pour millions of dollars, while a large proportion of the Iranian public live below the poverty line.
While the public protests may take time to dislodge the regime, its bold attempt to block the Strait of Hormuz and using it as a bargaining chip to counteract against the imposed sanction only quickens its final days. The attempt is a declaration of war against the whole world.
