BAHRAIN University has unveiled a plan to upgrade its library to keep pace with the growing number of students and cater to the needs of researchers.
The library contains more than 310,000 books, over 170,000 e-books, 25,000 electronic periodicals, and 2,500,000 academic thesis and dissertations in addition to 40 electronic databases.
The third floor of the facility will be revamped to provide special halls for individual or group researchers and will be equipped with the latest technologies.
“The number of books increased five-fold in around 20 years, jumping from 60,000 books in 1999 to more than 310,000 at present,” said Bahrain University Library and IT Services director Mohammed Al Talabi.
He also said that the number of borrowed books in 2016 and 2017 reached 132,438 while the number of borrowed e-books jumped from 9,964 in 2016 to 13,144 in 2017.
He added that students and faculty can use the ‘Bookmyne’ application on mobile phones to extend the borrowing period of a book without physically entering the library.
“The university has recently changed all the computers available to students in the library, which are a total of 160 computers, to new cloud-based high speed devices,” he added.
