TRADE unions have been warned against taking part in campaigns to promote election candidates running in this month’s national polls.
The Labour and Social Development Ministry said yesterday that trade unions and federations were prohibited from promoting election programmes of candidates ahead of the parliament and municipal elections on November 24.
It said unions must be impartial in the electoral process and called on everyone to abide by the rules and regulations issued by the High Elections Committee (HEC) to ensure the safety of the elections.
“The Labour and Social Development Ministry calls on trade unions and federations in Bahrain to abide by rules and regulations that ban political work, including promoting elections campaigns for parliamentary and municipal candidates for the elections,” said the ministry in a statement issued yesterday.
“According to the law, trade unions and federations are banned from taking part in any election campaigning.
“In addition, they are not allowed to take part in political work and they are not allowed to use any of their premises to promote any candidate in a bid to ensure all candidates receive a fair treatment.”
The ministry also said that legal action would be taken against those who break the law and promote candidates.
The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU), one of the largest trade union federations in the country, supported the decision yesterday and said that it was in the benefit of all election hopefuls.
“The decision makes sense because the law was placed to help all the candidates receive fair treatment during the elections,” said GFBTU assistant secretary for international relations Karim Radhi.
“Some candidates might not be backed by trade unions and trade union federations and it will not be fair to them.”
The GDN reported last week that election campaigning in mosques and places of worship has been banned.
The Jaffari Waqf (Endowment) Directorate said last Tuesday that imams, preachers and muezzins were prohibited from promoting the campaigns of candidates.
A total of 430 candidates are contesting the elections in the country’s four governorates – 293 for parliament and 173 for municipal councils.
People urged to cast their ballots on election day
While a total of 365,467 citizens are eligible to vote in the November 24 polls with a second round of voting for closely contested seats taking place on December 1.
Forty polling stations will be open from 8am to 8pm on election day, besides 14 general polling stations where residents of any constituency can vote.
Overseas voting will take place at 29 embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions abroad on November 20 and 27.
Meanwhile, the Elections Executive Committee said the supervisory committee had started distributing voter lists to parliamentary and municipal candidates in each constituency.
