A NEW halal certification agency will soon be set up in Bahrain to help traders export food items to Saudi Arabia.
This was revealed yesterday by Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (BCCI) food wealth committee chairman Khalid Al Amin.
“We are now co-operating with the Indonesian Embassy to set up a halal certification agency in Bahrain to help food traders export their goods,” he said in a statement.
His comments came after Saudi ruled that products not halal-certified and without ISO certification cannot be imported.
The GDN reported yesterday that Bahrain traders may not be able to export local products, particularly food items, to Saudi Arabia two months from now until it met requirements set by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.
Mr Al Amin said BCCI members held crucial talks yesterday with Saudi Embassy officials to discuss the matter.
“It was proposed to give a grace period to traders to meet the new requirements.
“The BCCI will hold talks with food traders about the new rules and compliance procedures that includes halal and ISO certification.”
