Team Bahrain racked up an incredible 15 wins yesterday in the biggest day for the hosts so far in the IMMAF World Championships at Khalifa Sports City’s Gym.
Victories on the second day of the 2019 Brave International Combat Week by the world’s top-ranked MMA squad came from several weight-classes, including two victories for athletes in the same weight class.
Welterweights Zagid Gaidarov and Ramaza Gitinov moved on to the next round, while Murtaza Talha Ali and Magomed Gadzhiiasulov sent messages to all remaining light heavyweights with decisive wins in their bracket.
Abbas Khan and Magomed Magomedov also advanced in the lightweight division.
Team Bahrain also shone on the first day of competition for women.
Beatriz Diniz, Brena Cardozo and Sabrina Sousa all came out victorious in their respective brackets and will move on to the next day of competitions.
In the heavyweight division, Shamil Gaziev closed out the day in style, knocking out his first opponent, Maksat Musabaev, from Kyrgystan.
Magomed Sheikhov advanced in the strawweights, as well as Magomed Idrisov, in the bantamweight division.
Other victorious Bahraini fighters included Ali Yaqoub who defeated Jamlet Aslanouf of Uzbekistan; Majumeed Shaikhov who beat Sharafi Adel of France; Zajed who defeated Davon Dickson of the US; Murad Josenov who won against Farhat of Kazakhistan; Shamel Ali emerged victorious against Zajrahan Ibrahim of Russia; and Murad Ibrahimov who triumphed over Jer Haris of Ireland.
Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, first deputy president of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and president of Bahrain Olympic Committee, was once again an energetic presence in the corner of Team Bahrain fighters, helping them and guiding them towards victory.
He celebrated the squad’s great start and will look forward to the coming days.
Organised by Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BMMAF) in collaboration with Brave Organisation and IMMAF-WMMAA, the event is running until November 16, 2019 at Khalifa Sports City’s Gym and feature the 6th edition of the Amateur World Championship and Brave 31 as well as KHK Open Championship.
Shaikh Khalid said: “Bahrain has strong players who have international experience and capable of achieving strong results. We hope Bahrain will earn a good share of the world championships despite the fact of the great challenges awaiting our champions. But we have full confidence in them.”
