MANAMA: Farmers in Bahrain have been warned that swarms of locusts could invade the kingdom, and other GCC countries, again this week.
The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry’s agriculture and marine resources said the locusts could arrive from Saudi Arabia.
The farmers were urged to report if they spot any locusts in their crops, spray pesticides and take the necessary safety measures.
“According to authorities in Saudi Arabia, a swarm of locusts will be in Eastern region due to winds from the north and the south,” said a statement.
“All farmers should take precautions and inform authorities if their plantations are affected.”
A plague of locusts had descended on Bahrain last month.
A number of videos circulating online showed the swarms covering Bahrain’s skies, mostly in areas in the Northern Governorate, with some disturbing videos showing the insects fully covering trees and buildings.
