MORE efforts are needed to raise awareness about autism and how to take care of autistic people, said a community worker.
Dr Dalal Abdulla Al Sherouqi spoke on the subject at an event organised by University College of Bahrain as part of its social commitment to raise awareness about autism.
She shared her knowledge and experience of raising her now 26-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old.
She also explained the various levels of autism, how the disorder manifests itself in different people and the amazing things that autistic people are capable of.
Dr Al Sherouqi is a member of a number of societies that aim to help those with mental disorders such as the Bahrain Society for Children with Behavioural and Communication Difficulties and the committee of mothers of Alia for Early Intervention.
Nearly 1,500 people are suffering from autism in Bahrain.
