AN automated bag drop system and e-gates are two of many technologies that will streamline passenger experience at Bahrain International Airport (BIA)’s new passenger terminal.
The self-bag drop system will reduce time spent by passengers in queues, minimise labour costs for airlines and provide enhanced check in capabilities, while the e-gates will verify travellers’ identities using biometrics, enabling them to move through immigration checkpoints faster, further reducing labour costs while still maintaining a high level of security.
“With its state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, BIA is now one of the most advanced airports in the region,” Bahrain Airport Company (BAC)’s acting vice president of ICT Mahmood Siddiqi said in a statement yesterday.
“These new systems not only enhance operational efficiency and security; they also make the airport experience quicker and more comfortable for passengers.”
While the systems are designed to be seamless and straightforward to use, staff will be on hand to provide support where needed.
The new terminal integrates 1,125km of fibre optic cable, 4,000 surveillance cameras, 440 flight information screens and 740 Wi-Fi access points to improve passenger experiences.
To help travellers better utilise time saved in check-in and immigration lines, the BIA has expanded its retail and recreational facilities.
Retail areas are three times larger than before, featuring a broader selection of Bahraini and international brands.
The Bahrain Airport Hotel and Spa, an airport clinic, tranquil lounges and a separate recreational area for unaccompanied minors provide additional relaxation options for waiting passengers.
“Airports have grown to become much more than just waiting areas for the next flight,” BAC’s chief commercial officer Ayman Zainal said.
“They serve as important shopping and dining destinations in their own right, which is why BIA has ensured a wider range of outlets and brands. With nearly 4,000sqm of combined duty-free space, 21 food and beverage outlets and more, the airport caters to virtually all types of passengers.”
Two exclusive lounges, one for Gulf Air business-class passengers and the Pearl lounge for premium passengers of other airlines, will ensure a state-of-the-art experience.
Amongst the dining options, Bahrain will get its first ever taste of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s combined Jamie’s Deli and Pizzeria concept.
Meanwhile, the Souq Al Qaisarya provides a diverse selection of local products as well as an art gallery and a theatre.
Those who want to take a break from dining and shopping can also explore two dedicated showrooms which will host regular archaeological and cultural exhibitions.
Outside, the airport has upgraded its parking facilities, now providing long-term options for up to 5,500 vehicles, as well as a short-stay multi-storey car park, automated payment machines and dedicated spaces for those with special needs.
