BAHRAIN has always mesmerised me. Its long history, confluences and influences of so many cultures, and legends have given Bahrain a distinct place in world history.
I keenly read the news (GDN, April 21) about the accident at Bin Noon Hostel. I knew that Bahrain was historically well known for its ship-building expertise. However, I was fascinated to read that Naim area was “home to boat builders linked by legend to the Prophet Noah”.
If you linked it to the legend that even Alexander the Great had ordered ships from this island, then it raises a few interesting questions:
1. Even if both these are just legends, then how old are they?
2. What is the source or origin of these claims?
3. Do these stories predate the Quran and the Bible?
It would make an interesting research project, and hopefully lead to a fully-fledged study.
I would call it Bahrainology.
