BAHRAIN’s infrastructure is set to receive a boost with projects worth BD260 million being implemented in various parts of the country.
A total of 116 strategic schemes worth BD260,199,774 covering roads, drainage and construction sector are underway until the second quarter of this year, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf said in a statement yesterday.
He stressed the ministry’s keenness to complete the work on time to enhance the road network and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
These include the BD30m expansion of the Al Fateh Highway, a project financed by the Saudi Fund for Development, the road network leading to Al Lawzi housing project in Hamad Town, and the first phase expansion of the Shaikh Zayed Highway.
The list of infrastructure projects also includes the Busaiteen flyover, the north Manama highway linking Muharraq and North Manama islands, and the first phase of Raya Highway.
The ministry is also working on revamping the roads network in Al Nasfa, Al Eker, Zinj, Riffa and other residential areas.
Work is underway to expand the Tubli wastewater treatment plant, a massive strategic project aimed to improve the environment and wildlife in Tubli Bay. Once completed, the station would be able to deal with inflows from different parts of Bahrain and increase the output of recycled water which will be used for irrigation and farming.
A $36.5m (BD13.8m) contract was awarded in 2019 to British water treatment provider Bluewater Bio to work on the Tubli wastewater treatment plant as part of a scheme backed by UK Export and Finance.
Phase 4 of the project aims to accommodate the increased flow of waste water – taking the average daily capacity from the present 200,000 cubic metres to 400,000 cubic meters.
Meanwhile, a rainwater drainage network is being implemented in Al Eker, along with other sewage projects in Juffair and Ghuraifa, the minister said.
A string of other construction projects launched by the ministry are also on track, particularly expansion of the veterinary quarantine in Buri, which is expected to cost BD556,789.
It follows His Majesty King Hamad’s directives to draw up a five-year strategy to boost food security by up to 30 per cent.
Quarantine
The quarantine facility will be able to accommodate 3,000 sheep and cattle which will be screened to ensure they are free of diseases.
Other construction projects include the social care complex in Hamad Town (BD6,431,538), Alba Social Centre in Budaiya, a multiple sclerosis centre in Muharraq, the new headquarters of the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry, the social complex in Isa Town and a quarantine facility at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club.
