Manama defeated Al Bataeh of the UAE 75-62 yesterday to claim their first victory in the 33rd Arab Club Basketball Championship being held in Alexandria, Egypt.
Manama, Bahrain’s sole representatives in the competition, had lost their opening Group D game 125-113 to Al Gharafa of Qatar on Wednesday and suffered their second consecutive defeat the next day when they were edged 93-90 by Kuwait Club.
They play their final group match tomorrow at 4pm against Beirut Club.
The top two teams from four groups will qualify for the quarter-finals. Kuwait Club and Beirut Club currently occupy the top two spots in Group D having won two games each they have played so far. Manama are third with just one more game to play in the group stage.
Eighteen teams from across the Arab region are taking part in the championship, organised by the Arab Basketball Confederation. The event will run until next Saturday.
