The National Geneome Centre has so far collected 27,000 biological samples in a major genetic survey covering different social categories and areas.
The centre is planning to collect a total of 50,000 samples by the end of 2023 as part of efforts to diagnose hereditary illnesses in Bahrain.
The centre said that the collected biological samples make up more than 53 per cent of the targeted number. The samples will serve to build reference genetic database that contributes to the development of personalised medicine and healthcare for Bahrainis.
The database will also help doctors and researchers to better highlight health risks and diagnose illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
“The procedure will contribute to mitigating risks or allocating the optimal treatment based on the expected response to each patient,” said the centre.
Doctors and supportive medical staff will start early next month attending training courses conducted by experts specialised in genetic medicine and molecular biology from Harvard Medical School and the Arabian Gulf University.
