Bahrain-based medic Dr Cristina Skrypnyk was recognised for her contributions to the field of rare diseases at a major regional conference held recently in Abu Dhabi.
The medical director of Arabian Gulf University’s Princess Al Jawahara Centre for Molecular Medicine and Inherited Disorders received the ‘Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Rare Diseases’ award in the physicians’ category at the fifth Middle East and North Africa Conference on Rare Diseases.
The award highlights three decades of Dr Skrypnyk’s work in medical genetics and inherited disorders, including contributions to genetic diagnosis, genomic medicine, medical education and scientific research.
Throughout her career, she has played a role in the advancement of rare disease care in Bahrain and the region, advocating for early diagnosis, greater awareness and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment.
As part of the conference’s scientific programme, Dr Skrypnyk delivered a lecture titled ‘Combining Genomics and Artificial Intelligence: A New Era for the Discovery and Care of Rare Diseases.’ The session explored how the technologies could transform the way rare diseases are identified, diagnosed and managed.
