Roman River, ridden by Edinson Rodrigues, clinched The Hawar Cup, the first Bahrain Turf Series race yesterday at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in a thrilling finish with Dark Shadow.
The two horses fought it out over the final metres of the 1200 metres straight course with Roman River just getting the better of Dark Shadow, ridden by Neil Callan, by a nose in a photo finish.
Local trainers Allan Smith and Hesham Al Haddad dominated the event with Smith-trained Roman River making it three wins in the series.
The second Bahrain Turf Series race on the card went to Classical Wave, under David Egan, in The Anchorman Cup run over 1800m. This success secured a fifth Bahrain Turf Series win for Al Haddad, who also trained the runner-up Zagato. Brains, trained by Jamie Osbourne, ran a super race finishing three quarters of a length behind for third place.
Present at the event were REHC High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Supreme Council for the Environment Vice President and REHC High Committee vice-chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa.

Saya Corp board chairman Zayed Al-Amin presented the International Hawar Cup to Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa, along with prizes to Smith and jockey Rodrigues. He also presented the Anchorman Cup to Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa and prizes to trainer Al-Haddad and jockey Eigen.
In the first race for purebred Bahraini Arabian horse Wahoo over 1400m, Al Jalabi 1791 of Al Riffa Stable, ridden by Abdullah Faisal, won first place.
In the Royal Golf Club Cup race over 1400m, favourite Strange, owned by Shaikh Isa bin Abdullah bin Isa Al Khalifa, and ridden by Abdullah Faisal raced to victory followed by Mudalled, trained by Al Haddad and ridden by Buddy Mathers in second place.
In the race for locally-bred horses over 2000m, Sinjar of Al-Nawaif Stable and the Futurist Abdullah Kuwaiti with jockey Louis Edmunds won first place, followed by Perfect Revenge for the Bastaki Stable.
In the House Me Cup race for imported horses over 1400m, Fifth Fleet owned by MKR, Haider Ibrahim and jockey Owen Walsh won first place, with Burj owned by Wardah Al Jubouri Al Jubouri and Al Mudmar Youssef Al-Buainain and jockey Hussein Makki in second place.
