Bahrain's Fatema Almahmeed registered a personal best time last night competing in the women’s 50 metres freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
Sixteen-year-old Fatema appeared in the first of 12 heats and finished second among four swimmers in a time of 32.28s seconds.
Fatema shattered her old personal best of 33.90s. She, however, did not make it through to the next stage. Only the best 16 swimmers from all the preliminary heats booked a berth in the women’s 50m freestyle semi-finals.
Nervous
“It feels great to get a new personal best,” Fatema told the GDN last night by phone from Rio.
“I was really nervous at first, but when I got into the water I just did my best and I feel very happy with my performance. I actually think that I did better than I had expected to, and that makes me feel really good.
“This has been a wonderful experience for me. Being able to fly the Bahrain flag in an event such as this makes me feel very proud. I learned a lot as a swimmer and I hope I can be as good as the other great athletes here one day.”
In shooting, Bahrain’s Mahmood Haji finished 46th among 47 participants in the men’s 50m rifle prone qualification round.
He scored 612.6 points but it was far from the top mark of 629 achieved by Sergey Kamenskiy of Russia which was a new Olympic record.
Haji’s scores were 101.5, 102.4, 101.0, 102.9, 100.9 and 103.9.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Abraham Rotich was disqualified from the men’s 800 metres heats for a lane infringement.
