RIO DE JANEIRO: Bahrain's Fatima Abdulrazzaq claimed a gold medal yesterday in the shot put competition (F-53) of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Fatima clinched first place with a record throw of 4.76 metres, ahead of Deepa Malik of India, who finished second with a throw of 4.61m, while Dimitra Korokida of Greece was third in 4.28 metres.
Both Malik and Korokida also beat the old record.
Meanwhile, the second Bahrain in the fray, Ruba Al Omari, will compete in the discus throw on Saturday.
More than 4,500 athletes representing 170 countries are competing in 32 events for a total of 526 medals.
The Bahrain delegation includes Bahrain Disabled Sports Federations (BDSF) general secretary Abdelrazaq Zein Aldin, national coaches Yousif Saleh Al Riffai and Eman Hassan Jassim and administrative staff Sara Ibrahim Al Shawy.
