AROUND 160 tonnes of used furniture were removed from 61 homes in the first six months of this year by the Southern Municipality as part of a cleanliness campaign.
The ‘Call For Your Furniture’ drive is held in collaboration with the Southern Municipal Council and Urbaser Bahrain.
Workers dismantle and transport used furniture from homes using a designated truck while observing preventive precautionary measures such as wearing gloves and masks.
“The initiative aims to reduce the dumping of furniture in open spaces, streets or near garbage containers as it is difficult for the cleaning company to transport it using the clamps designated for rubbish or simple waste,” said a municipality statement.
“In addition, old furniture can be reused by charity societies if in reasonably good condition while unusable furniture can be recycled.”
A total 484 homes in the Southern Governorate benefited from the service, resulting in the removal of nearly 1,210 tonnes of used furniture since the initiative was launched in June 2020.
The campaign is currently targeting the elderly, those with special needs and special cases two days of the week (Sunday and Thursday) with a special hotline 80070000 set up to receive requests.
