BAHRAIN has exceeded its ambitious target of planting 140,000 trees in 2022 by seven per cent (107pc).
Ten thousand extra trees were planted as part of the ‘Forever Green’ national afforestation campaign), ordered by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa yesterday planted tree number 150,000 at The Avenues walkway, in the presence of Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) president Kamal Ahmed and Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak.
Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr Mohammed Bin Daina, Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj and other officials also attended.
The palm tree which was planted yesterday was one of the early yellow varieties that bears the name (bajeera).
Known for its long four-week harvest season, this variety has green-gray fronds covered with a waxy layer and yellowish-orange grape.
Its round-shaped yellow fruit, which is characterised by its large-sized nucleus, ripens in the second half of June of each year.
The afforestation plan aims to achieve Bahrain’s commitment to reach net-zero neutrality by 2060, and mitigate global climate challenges and environmental degradation.
Bahrain aspires to double the number of trees by 2035, with mangrove trees increasing fourfold in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change goals (COP26).
The plan also includes a number of initiatives, such as increasing the number of trees in government projects, encouraging community collaboration to maximise green space, introducing policies that support afforestation, and encouraging individuals to participate in afforestation.
