Riyadh: A Saudi woman has been forced to divorce her husband over 'social incompatibility'.
A judge in Al-Ayina Court in north Riyadh insisted on upholding the initial verdict that separated Maha al-Tamimi from husband Al-Qarni over alleged 'superior origin'.
The new verdict finalises the case which caused a huge controversy over the last six months.
The wife, who just gave birth to her daughter Noof a few months ago, appeared in a video posted on social media websites appealing for help to remain with her husband.
The new ruling was referred to the Saudi Court of Cassation for a final decision on whether to uphold the forced divorce or overrule the verdict.
A source close to the couple told Arabic newspaper Okaz that Ms. Maham categorically refuses the idea of divorcing her husband and returning to her family.
She has reportedly decided to appeal to the Ministry of Labour and Social Development for Protection if the divorce ruling was upheld.
The wife’s uncles had first lodged the lawsuit demanding her divorce because they doubted her husband’s lineage.
