Mps have suggested giving Bahraini workers a timely Ramadan bonus on their monthly salaries for those who work in both the public and private sectors.
They have voted unanimously to ‘double your monthly wage’ if you earn below BD2,000 and a ‘half-monthly salary boost’ for those who earn more.
Although, they have no power to dictate what private companies decide over bonuses it has been suggested government funding could compensate them for paying out the gift.
The proposal, approved unanimously without debate by MPs during the weekly session yesterday, will be now reviewed by the Cabinet.
There have been past approvals for bonuses to public sector employees following parliamentary requests but the last was 13 years ago to the tune of BD200.
Other proposals approved during the session and referred to the Cabinet for review were:
Constructing a pedestrian bridge in Eker and Ma’ameer following repeated accidents
Giving Quran reciters time off during Ramadan to spread the word of God
Resolving the environmental problems in Buhair Valley
Opening the Hoora Health Centre 24 hours
Increasing annual budgets of endowment directorates for higher pay for imams and muezzins
Seeking the government to pay five per cent extra for every month it delays due payments to suppliers and contractors
Restoration of the medicine delivery system through authorised companies to patients who can’t travel to hospital, as carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic
Tightening up procedures for the acquirement of tourist visas following claimed misuse for employment and business purposes
Having part-time imams and muezzins officially registered at the Civil Service Commission
Halting planned cuts to the Hoora Cemetery for road expansion
Reopening the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) Muharraq branch; and
Fixing monthly housing instalments at BD199 even if the beneficiaries’ revenue or wage increases (two proposals).
MPs also approved an urgent proposal to issue a statement on the success of the Inter-Parliamentary Union 146th Assembly held in Bahrain last week. Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam read his own statement at the beginning of the session.
Parliament approved a government-drafted legislation on the GCC Unified Electronic Payments System and referred it to the Shura Council.
