The UAE has announced fines of up to Dh500,000 (approx. BD51,333) for those using insulting and offensive language online.
Public Prosecution has warned citizens and residents that swearing at others, hurling insults, or damaging someone's reputation is a serious crime punishable by hefty fines between Dh250,000 (BD25,666) and Dh500,000 (BD51,333), Khaleej Times reported.
The authority also revealed that the punishment could even be "heavier" if the victim is a public sector employee or anyone in public service, according to the law (Article 43 of the Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021).
With a zero tolerance policy for offensive behaviour, a case in the past has led to jail time and a fine of Dh20,000 for a man who called his wife an "idiot" on WhatsApp.
