AN expat accused of forcing a fellow expat to work without pay or days off before sacking her for ‘nagging’ will have a verdict recorded on his court case later this month.
The Pakistani businessman faced charges of human trafficking yesterday in his first and last hearing.
Judges decided to announce May 30 as decision day because he is still at large and did not appear at the trial’s opening hearing.
“I signed a one-year contract to work at a perfume store run by the defendant for BD230 a month,” said the now-unemployed Pakistani woman to prosecutors. “But I was surprised to find out that I was forced to work, continuously, without wages or vacations,” added the 28-year-old.
The employee said that her boss kept deducting money from her promised salary, claiming that it was going to pay for her visa.
Court documents added that the defendant eventually fired her, saying that she ‘nagged too much.’
The woman finally reported the defendant to the police because he allegedly refused to return her passport, even after dismissing her.
A police detective told Public Prosecution that the defendant had ‘vanished from sight,’ noting that he is also wanted on a number of other cases and suspected criminal behaviour.
Commercial registration (CR) records indicate that the 37-year-old defendant owned 10 per-cent of the perfume store which was located in Manama Centre. The CR was cancelled only last month.
