THE local media has reported that 1,467 violations were recorded by truck drivers during a recent drive by the General Directorate of Traffic.
These violations included speeding, jumping the red light, not adhering to the correct lane, wrong overtaking and not adhering to the time specified for trucks to be on the road.
There is no doubt that the authorities make all the efforts to prevent violations but owners of transport companies have a role to play. Because of the seriousness of these violations, the penalty and fine must be doubled and business owners must also impose strict penalties on their employees.
I believe large companies apply strict safety standards within and outside the workplace and also impose disciplinary measures on violators to ensure road-users’ safety. There are also instances of mechanically imposing a limit of maximum speed of vehicles so that the driver cannot exceed the specified speed.
The issue should be dealt with quickly and seriously in the public interest. It would be preferable if the authorities co-ordinated with business owners to impose fines on violators from both sides, in addition to employers taking deterrent administrative measures.
Everyone is aware of fatal traffic accidents due to non-compliance with traffic laws, and many innocent people have paid a heavy price. I have also encountered a very dangerous situation on the road – when I was with six family members – just because a truck driver chose to jump a red light.
I hope that officials will be able to rein in reckless drivers and help preserve the lives of the people.
