INVESTIGATIONS are continuing in the case of a young Bahraini man who died due to complications following weight-loss surgery, the Public Prosecution has stated.
According to a statement issued yesterday, the authorities launched an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy after receiving a report from the young man’s father.
Hussain Abdulhadi died on June 6 after undergoing a bariatric procedure, known as a sleeve gastrectomy, on May 29, at a private healthcare facility.
“The father of the deceased reached out to the Public Prosecution, accusing the doctor who performed the sleeve gastrectomy surgery of committing a medical error that led to his son’s death,” the statement read.
“The Prosecution went to the hospital where the patient died and appointed a forensic doctor to carry out an autopsy to arrive at the cause of death.”
Witnesses were also interviewed by prosecutors, including the late Mr Abdulhadi’s father and the medical crew that was involved in the surgery.
A top prosecutor called on to the general public not to draw conclusions from social media posts about the incident, until the investigation was complete and the prosecution announces its next step.
The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) is currently preparing a report to establish the cause of death, whether a medical error was involved and if someone should be held accountable.
NHRA has already announced that its Medical Errors Committee was reviewing the evidence and determining the facts of the case.
The 29-year-old’s death certificate listed septicaemia and cardiac arrest as the cause of death which it states were a result of a gastric leak following the sleeve gastrectomy operation.
Septicaemia is a medical term for blood poisoning, especially that caused by bacteria or their toxins.
The official document was signed by a doctor from the clinic where the surgery took place.
A sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that allows the patient to lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach from 15 to 25 per cent of its original size.
Bariatric surgeries have been known to cause complications and have varying success rates.
The GDN earlier reported that the late Bahraini’s relatives claimed that he started experiencing severe abdominal pain two days after the procedure.
They alleged that his deteriorating condition was ignored by healthcare professionals at the private facility.
Mr Abdulhadi’s burial took place at Jeblat Habshi Cemetery last Thursday.
