A FORMER convict has been sentenced to three years in jail for assaulting a police officer who was trying to arrest him for not serving his alternative penalty.
The High Criminal Court found the man guilty despite him denying the charge.
The defendant was admitted to the King Hamad University Hospital to be treated for a leg fracture when officers went to arrest him.
Verdict papers say that the defendant resisted being handcuffed, tried to flee and ‘attempted to obstruct policemen from doing their job’.
Judges said they did not deem it necessary to hear any defence witnesses in the case.
They added that the defendant was a repeat offender, having previously completed a three-year jail term for assaulting a public employee.
The defendant said in court that he wanted to stay out of trouble and therefore had no reason to commit the assault.
“I was in prison for eight years; I don’t want to go back,” he said. “My future is already gone; I want to get married and spend time with my blind mother.”
He also alleged that the arresting officers did not allow him to relieve himself despite being diabetic and having a broken leg.
He claimed that he soiled himself in public, but thanked the policeman who bathed him after his jeans were soiled.
