BIG-HEARTED servicemen and women of the US 5th Fleet have been once again assisting staff members of Bahrain Mobility International (BMI) in a building project to provide children with a new play area and other facilities.
More than 15 members from the US Navy helped clean and lay new turf for a playground at the non-profit and non-governmental humanitarian organisation’s centre in Isa Town.
“We’re very excited about the playground,” said BMI physiotherapy director Zainab Radhi. “I know that when the navy comes here something great will happen. We had nowhere for the kids to play outside so this was a much-needed addition. We provide free education for kids with disabilities, so it’s difficult within our budget to cover the cost of extras.”
International military personnel have frequently supported children and staff at BMI which was established in 1979 to offer speech therapy, occupational therapy and other special needs services to the community.
Last October, more than 80 service members and civilians representing multiple naval forces assisted with several clean-up and beautification projects at the centre. The volunteers included sailors, marines, coastguardsmen, soldiers, and international members assigned to Combined Maritime Forces based in Bahrain.
