While Ukraine will not join Nato following next week’s summit, its members will discuss what steps are necessary for Kyiv to qualify for the military alliance’s membership, the White House said yesterday.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the summit, which will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, will be an important step in the path for Ukraine to join the organisation.
Meanwhile, the head of Nato said the military alliance would unite at the summit on how to bring Kyiv closer to joining, while Ukraine’s president drummed up support for its membership bid on a tour of several Nato states.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the Czech Republic and Slovakia a day after holding talks in Bulgaria, and travelled to Türkiye later yesterday.
At a news conference in Bratislava, Zelenskiy said he expected unity among Nato member states at the summit in Vilnius and wanted concrete steps on Ukraine’s movement to join the alliance.
