FEWER number of Bahrainis were injured at worksites in the public and private sectors in Q1 this year, according to a new government report.
The latest Social Insurance Organisation (SIO) statistics, for the first quarter of this year, revealed that 116 Bahraini workers were injured, 31 in the public sector and 85 in the private sector.
In comparison, in Q1 2022, 141 Bahraini workers sustained worksite injuries, 34 in the public sector and 107 in the private sector.
Correspondingly, in Q1 2023, 92 expat workers were injured, four in the public sector and 88 in the private sector; while in Q1 2022, 73 expats were injured, five in the public sector and 68 in the private sector.
The total number of injuries registered in Q1 2023 were 208 – down from 214 in Q1 2022.
According to the Q1 2023 report, 71 per cent of the injuries registered among Bahrainis in the public sector were work accidents – 22 Bahrainis (12 females and 10 males) while the four non-Bahrainis included three females and one male.
Meanwhile, seven Bahrainis (five females and two males) met with road accidents, while one Bahraini man suffered stress and fatigue and one Bahraini woman suffered from an occupational disease.
In the private sector, 48 Bahrainis (46 men and two women) and 55 non-Bahrainis (53 men and two women) suffered from ‘other worksite injuries’ while 12 non-Bahraini men had objects falling on them and eight Bahrainis (six men and two women) fell.
Also in the private sector, two Bahraini men collided with moving machinery, three Bahraini men collided with other objects, three Bahraini men were entrapped, five Bahraini men and one Bahraini woman had objects falling on them, four Bahraini men fell from high places, six Bahraini men met with traffic accidents along with one Bahraini woman, two Bahrainis (one man and one woman) were injured carrying heavy objects and two Bahrainis (one woman and one man) were injured by sharp objects.
Meanwhile, one expat man collided with an object, three expat men were entrapped, one expat woman and one expat man fell, five expat men fell from high places, one expat man was injured by a hot object, six expats (five men and one woman) were injured in traffic accidents, two expat men were cut by machinery and one expat man was injured by a sharp object.
The GDN previously reported that the number of worksite injuries in the public and private sectors for the whole of last year was the lowest since 2018.
The SIO’s official report last year stated that the total number of work-related injury cases during 2022 was 787 – 460 citizens and 327 expats.
Comparatively, 805 worksite injuries were recorded in 2021, 870 in 2020, 1,018 in 2019 and 1,037 in 2018.
