THE Information Affairs Ministry of has defended the screening of the Hollywood film Barbie in cinemas in Bahrain.
“There is nothing in the movie which can be deemed offensive to decency, or calls for immorality, harms society, or violates regulations or laws,” said the ministry.
Represented by the State Litigation Agency, the ministry urged the court not to accept a lawsuit filed to ban the film, said our Arabic sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
Lawyer Haitham Boughamar had lodged a case in a bid to halt the screening of the movie in the kingdom.
The court said that the plaintiff did not attach any evidence to the case file indicating that he had submitted any request to the ministry, and it was rejected.
“The distribution company has been authorised to screen the movie in Bahrain’s cinemas, which means that the present lawsuit lacks its legal basis and should be rejected,” said the agency in its plea.
Defending the screening of the film, the ministry – represented by the agency – said that Bahrain is not isolated from the outside world.
It noted that treaties and declarations which champion freedom of thought and expression are considered an enforceable law in Bahrain.
“The absolute prohibition of any media material contradicts the most basic rights of the Bahraini citizen in a country whose constitution emphasis freedom of opinion and expression since the 1973,” said the agency.
The plaintiff said that he is preparing a motion to reply to the agency in the upcoming court session on Thursday.
