PROFESSIONAL divers from across Bahrain will be looking to make a splash on Friday as the sixth Nasser bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season continues with the ‘Ghais Al Mawrooth’ contest, at Hayr Shutaya off the north-eastern coast of the kingdom.
The event will see participants diving into the reef without the use of any modern equipment to extract oysters at a depth of about 15 metres.
They will have 20 minutes to collect as many clams as they can, with the winner being the one who manages to collect the largest number.
Those wishing to take part will need to have a valid free diving licence.
The organising committee met yesterday to inspect the necessary equipment to ensure they can be used safely by the participants, and went over all security measures and procedures.
A special team has also been employed to monitor participants during the event.
The Nasser bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season, being organised by the Bahrain Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth), is one of the most prestigious competitions in the country.
It kicked off on August 28 with a 3,000-metre traditional rowing race, held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Sumoum, led by Ahmed Nasser Al Bousmait, were the stars of the opening two rounds, having won the Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup and the Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup.
The rowing champions are now hopeful of scoring a hat-trick in the final round for the coveted King Hamad Cup, which will be held towards the end of the season next month.
The Nasser bin Hamad Marine Heritage season was launched years ago to revive traditional sea sports, and the mission to preserve the pride and heritage of Bahraini sporting events continues as it is now in its sixth edition.
Meanwhile, the ninth edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Falconry and Hunting Season will make its return in November and will go on until February.
