A social media influencer with more than a million followers has been arrested for allegedly posting a video ‘disrespecting a figure revered by a religious group’.
The Bahraini woman allegedly published videos on her social media account that ‘constitutes a transgression’ against a person who is ‘revered by members of a specific faith,’ the Public Prosecution said in a statement yesterday.
She is currently under investigation and had earlier been reported to the Interior Ministry’s Electronic Crimes Directorate for her social media activity.
“Individuals have the right to express their opinions freely on social media as long as they abide by Bahrain’s constitution and the law,” said Cyber Crimes Prosecution head Noora Al Mualla.
“After all, the constitution protects different religions and sects, and hence insulting sacred practices and rituals is criminalised and punished with imprisonment or a fine.”
