A Gulf national has been fined BD220,000 after he was found guilty of smuggling thousands of kilos of Indian chewing tobacco into Bahrain.
The acting head of the Tax Evasion Unit at the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution Office said the ruling was issued by the Fifth Minor Criminal Court, which also ordered his deportation.
According to the customs officers at the seaport, 11,000kg of the banned substance, in 440 packages, were hidden inside a secret compartment on the roofs of two vehicles. The contraband and the vehicles were seized and examined by officers.
The accused was referred to the criminal court which issued the verdict yesterday.
