ONE of Bahrain’s most respected horse riding instructors has passed away after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Anki Holmstrom, a much-loved Swedish expatriate, called Bahrain her home for almost 40 years and was instrumental in encouraging countless adults and children to take to the saddle.
She only retired to live in a house in a picturesque Swedish forest in 2020 and died last Tuesday aged 63.
“Anki’s journey in Bahrain was marked by her vibrant spirit, unwavering dedication and her profound love for horses and dogs,” a close friend told the GDN.
Anki arrived in Bahrain in 1984, where she initially worked for Delmon Riding School in Sehla. She then moved on to help establish Shakhura Riding Centre before acquiring a plot of land in 1989, where she built Twin Palms Riding Centre.
Her passion for horses led Twin Palms to quickly become a cherished hub for horse enthusiasts of all ages.
Anki was a true trailblazer in the equestrian world, known for her exceptional skills as a rider and horse-riding instructor.
Her vision and determination made Twin Palms into a place where the bond between riders and horses was nurtured, creating countless memories that will forever live in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her, heartbroken former pupils told the GDN.
Beyond her equestrian pursuits, Anki was a larger-than-life character, known for her infectious laughter and a remarkable ability to bring people together. Her magnetic personality made her a friend to all, and she touched the lives of many.
She is survived by her loving mother, Ulla, sister, Madde, brother Patrik and nephew, Leo.
“Anki will forever be remembered as a passionate equestrian, a devoted friend, and a beacon of light in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her,” an in memoriam statement added.
“Her legacy at Twin Palms Riding Centre will continue to inspire generations of riders, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the honour of calling her a friend.”
Another admirer told the GDN: “It’s very sad news about Anki, who taught me, my son and daughter to ride, but a great relief to know she didn’t suffer for long and kept in great spirits to the end. She was one in a million.”
Anki’s funeral will be held on Friday, October 20, at Råggärd Kyrka, 458 96 Högsäter in Sweden. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in her name to Cancerfonden.se Sweden
Rest in peace, Anki (1960-2023).
