LEGISLATORS last night confirmed their stand and solidarity with the Palestinian people.
An urgent proposal to issue a statement in support of the Palestinian people submitted by Parliament’s 40 MPs was approved by 39 MPs.
MP Waleed Al Dossary was absent from the first session at the National Assembly Complex due to an illness.
In the statement, Parliament expressed its deep concern about the unprecedented developments in the Gaza Strip between a number of Palestinian factions and Israeli forces.
“The unprecedented developments are due to the ongoing violations of the rights of the Palestinian people, the repetition of systematic provocations against their sanctities, and the storming of the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque, in disregard of the resolutions of international legitimacy,” said the statement read out by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam.
“Parliament reiterates the firm and strong Bahraini position on the Palestinian issue as it is the first Arab issue, and that’s solidarity with the brotherly Palestinian people, in defending their legitimate rights, and providing support and assistance in all its forms, material, moral, political, diplomatic, parliamentary and media.”
Parliament called on the international community to take action to stop the escalation between the two sides, oblige the aggressor to stop his blatant violations of international and humanitarian law, return rights to their owners, achieve justice for the Palestinian people, and establish their independent state.
Meanwhile, Mr Al Musallam said the progress of the country and welfare of citizens will continue being the pillar of all work in Parliament in co-ordination with the Shura Council and the government.
Several MPs, including first deputy speaker Abdulnabi Salman and Mohammed Al Hussaini, called on the government to convey the message to the Israeli diplomatic representative in Bahrain.
MP Dr Mariam Al Dhaen also signalled the role of parliamentary diplomacy in spreading the values of peace and consolidating security and stability, which is the basis for the development and prosperity of states as directed by His Majesty King Hamad.
The Palestinian issue also took centre stage at Parliament’s general-secretariat meeting following the session last night chaired by Mr Al Musallam and attend by his two deputies.
Mr Al Musallam asked the international community to intervene and offer protection to the Palestinians.
Also, in their separate first session last night, Shura Council Chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh emphasised on the same topic as he gave his opening speech.
In a statement on behalf of his colleagues on the Palestinian topic, Mr Al Saleh conveyed Shura’s support to the Palestinian struggle.
“We will continue our support to the brotherly Palestinian people to get its legitimate rights to have its own state and East Jerusalem as its capital,” said Mr Al Saleh.
“This comes as we call for self-control and calm in the face of recent developments witnessed by Gaza Strip between Palestinian factions and Israeli forces,” he said.
“The ongoing fighting and engagement will affect peace and stability in the region and negatively affect efforts and initiatives that seek peace in the Middle East.
“The Palestinian cause will remain the Arab world’s main case and the two-state solution will remain our utmost goal.”
