MP Zainab Abdulamir has become the first female MP from the current Parliament line-up to become chairwoman of a committee.
She won the seat following the luck of a draw with MP Hassan Rashid, both earning four votes each.
Also making history, it would be the first time both top seats in the committee would be held by women since the start in 2002.
MP Eman Shuwaiter was elected unopposed as vice-chairwoman.
Eight females were elected to Parliament during National Elections last year.
Mohammed Al Hussaini was elected as chairman of the services committee and Lulwa Al Rumaihi as vice-chairwoman.
Abdulla Al Rumaihi was elected chairman of the foreign affairs, defence and national security committee, while Dr Mariam Al Dhaen was elected as vice-chairwoman.
Mohsin Al Asbool was elected as legislative and legal affairs committee chairman, while Mahmood Fardan kept his seat as vice-chairman for the second year running.
Hisham Al Awadhi was elected chairman of the public utilities and environment affairs committee and Mohammed Al Bulooshi vice-chairman.
All five chairmen will now join National Assembly and Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam and his two deputies in the general-secretariat.
Also elected yesterday were Jameel Hassan, Hanan Fardan, Dr Ali Al Nuaimi and Dr Hisham Al Asheeri to the nine-member Parliamentary Executive Committee.
The committee, responsible for selections of abroad participations, is chaired by Mr Al Musallam.
Four Shura Council members will be elected for the committee during their session on Sunday next week.
Ten MPs have been also elected to draft a reply to His Majesty King Hamad’s address at the opening of the second session of the National Assembly’s sixth legislative term on Sunday.
