Two fishermen arrested by the Coastguard in possession of 320kg of illegally caught shrimp have been sentenced to a month in prison and will be deported once the term has been completed.
According to the Ministries and Public Bodies Chief Prosecutor, the men, described as Asian by the Public Prosecution, appeared before the Minor Criminal Court. One of the men was also fined BD700.
The fishermen were arrested by the Coastguard near Nurana Coast for using prohibited bottom trawl nets, not providing an automatic identification device on their boat, failing to have safety tools on-board, as well as sailing without obtaining a navigation licence.
The boat and seized shrimp were disposed of at public auction and the proceeds received deposited in the Public Prosecution’s treasury.
The Chief Prosecutor urged fishermen to adhere to legal rules in order to maintain the balance of the marine environment, highlighting that banned bottom trawl nets negatively affect marine life.
