The Ministry of Health announced Thursday the success of a medical team at the Farwaniya Specialised Dental centre in performing a delicate surgical operation, the first of its kind in Kuwait, to treat a case of severe atrophy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on both sides.
The ministry said in a press statement that the operation was performed by maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Ahmad Al-Kandari, with a medical team from the centre's maxillofacial surgery unit. The ministry explained that the operation was successful and represented a qualitative leap in the field of maxillofacial surgery using the latest medical technology.
It explained that the 3D virtual surgery technology was used, which allowed the team to plan the surgical intervention with extreme precision and design a fully customised artificial joint to fit the anatomical structure of the patient's face and her functional needs.
It indicated that the jaw atrophy was accompanied by jaw asymmetry in a patient in her thirties, causing her severe difficulties in opening the mouth, breathing, chewing and speaking.
The ministry affirmed that is success reflects the development of the level of specialised healthcare in the State of Kuwait, in addition to the competence of national cadres and their ability to perform complex surgeries according to the highest international standards.
