THE King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) in A’ali celebrated its first anniversary yesterday.
Established in 1903, AMH is the first and oldest medical facility not just in Bahrain but perhaps all across the Arabian Gulf.
The first of the AMH hospitals was established with Dr Sharon Thoms as the first chief medical officer of the facility. He was one of the first modern physicians in Bahrain who worked to advance the kingdom’s healthcare.
AMH corporate chief executive Dr George Cheriyan highlighted that the not-for-profit hospital has saved countless lives and continues to serve the community for more than 120 years.
“When the new A’ali hospital opened last year, on January 26, it became the fifth and the largest of the American Mission Hospital’s five facilities,” said Dr Cheriyan.
The group’s chief executive Julia Tovey also praised the hospital’s accomplishment in the short time it’s been open.
“His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, had inaugurated it on the same day, marking the completion of 120 years of the hospital’s service to the country,” said Ms Tovey during the celebrations.
Although it has only been 10 months since the beginning of operations at the facility, Ms Tovey added that international patients have come to use the ultra-modern facilities.
Meanwhile, the hospital’s chief of medical staff and KHAMH director Dr Deepak Abraham highlighted the hospital’s tertiary care with its expert physicians, cutting-edge medical technology and the ability to cater to a wide range of medical and surgical needs.
KHAMH chief operating officer Peter Kennedy also pointed out the hospital’s exceptional features which allows KHAMH doctors to meet all of their patient’s needs.
“With modular and hybrid operating rooms, labour rooms, ICUs dialysis units, IVF centre, hyperbaric chambers, ESWL facilities, endoscopy suite, and imaging technology, such as 128 Slice CT Scanning and 1.5 Tesla MRI, we have the capability to meet all kinds of patients’ needs,” he said.
Since the establishment of the hospital, it has gone on to win prestigious awards and be remembered for its historic procedures. Last year, the hospital won the best designed hospital project in the 13th Annual MEED Projects Awards.
