India and Indonesia came away with three gold medals apiece at the Bahrain Para Badminton International 2024, which came to a close at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
England, Malaysia, and Hong Kong took home two gold medals each, while Switzerland and Turkey won one gold apiece.
The winners were competing in both standing and wheelchair categories.
Manoj Sarkar bagged a golden double for India in the men’s singles SL3 after defeating compatriot Umesh Vikram Kumar 23-21, 21-9 in their final. Sarkar then teamed up with Deep Ranjan Bisoyee to beat Indians Jagadesh Dilli and Subhrajeet Maharana 21-15, 23-21 to claim the men’s doubles SU5 and women’s doubles SU3-SL5 crown.
Manisha Ramadass earned India’s third gold with a 21-9, 21-14 win over Rosa Efomo De Marco of Italy in the women’s singles SU5 final.
For Indonesia, Fredy Setiawan enjoyed a golden double. He overcame a tough challenge from India’s Tarun Tarun 23-21, 21-18 to claim gold in the men’s singles SL4, and then later joined partner Leani Ratri Oktila in a 21-8, 21-15 victory over Dilli and De Marco in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category.
Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroho then won against compatriot Dheva Anrimusthi via walkover in the men’s singles SU5 final.
England’s gold medals were clinched by Rachel Choong who beat Poland’s Oliwia Szmigiel 21-14, 21-14 for the women’s singles SH6 title, and then partnered Jack Shephard to take the doubles SH6 category with a 21-11, 21-12 victory against the Hong Kong pair of Chu Man Kai and Choi Wing Kei.
For Malaysia, Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli beat France’s David Toupe 21-17, 21-8 to claim the men’s singles WH1 class. Ramli and Noor Azwan Noorlan then beat Toupe and France’s Thomas Jakobs 18-21, 21-14, 21-14 to claim the doubles WH1-WH2 title.
Hong Kong’s pair of golds were claimed by Chu in the men’s singles SH6 final, where he defeated Shephard 24-22, 21-5, and Chan Ho Yuen, who added the other after beating Jakobs 16-21, 21-15, 21-17 in the men’s singles WH2 final.
Switzerland’s Ilaria Renggli and Turkey’s Tugce Celik completed the tournament’s gold-medallists. Renggli defeated compatriot Cynthia Mathez 21-9, 21-14 to win the women’s singles WH2 title, while Celik won the women’s singles SU5-SL4 class after beating Jyoti Jyoti of India 21-14, 21-17.
