Gold worth Rs 4.26 crore (approx. BD 169,000) has been seized by Indian customs officials at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The gold, weighing nearly 2.8kg, was found on IndiGo Flight 6E-1478 arriving from Dubai.
Acting on suspicion, customs officers inspected the aircraft with the help of engineers and discovered two tightly wrapped plastic pouches hidden inside a wall-mounted speaker unit in the front lavatory.
The pouches contained 24 gold biscuits of 24-carat purity.
Officials surmised that the method of concealment pointed to a sophisticated smuggling operation, with the gold likely hidden inside the aircraft for retrieval after landing by a passenger or ground crew.
No individual has come forward to claim ownership of the gold, which has subsequently been declared unclaimed and seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
