CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious riders Matej Mohoric and Edoardo Zambanini each came away with a bronze medal in their respective national championship road races in Europe.
Mohoric captured his bronze in the men’s elite event in Slovenia, while Zambanini triumphed in his men’s elite road race in Italy.
Both competitions took place on Sunday and they completed a fantastic seven-medal haul by Bahrain Victorious members in the road races and individual time trials (ITT) of their countries.
In the Slovenia road race, Mohoric claimed his bronze after completing the 150.5-kilometre distance two minutes and 51 seconds behind gold-medallist Domen Novak of UAE Team Emirates, who won in three hours 45 minutes 51 seconds. Gal Glivar of UAE Team Emirates Gen Z clinched the silver medal after finishing 21 seconds behind Novak.
Also competing in that race was Bahrain Victorious’ Matevz Govekar, who was classified 10th overall 10:40 behind the victor.
With his bronze medal, Mohoric added to the gold he won in the Slovenian ITT national championship, held last Friday. He triumphed after completing the 30.1-kilometre individual ride in 35:08 – seven seconds quicker than Govekar, who made it a Bahrain Victorious one-two.
Meanwhile, in Italy, Zambanini finished third in a gruelling 228km road race. He was a mere 17 seconds behind winner Alberto Bettiol of EF Education-Easypost team, while Lorenzo Rota of Intermarche-Wanty was the silver-medallist, reaching the end alongside Zambanini.
Two other Bahrain Victorious riders competed in the event, namely Alberto Bruttomesso and Nicolo Buratti. They were amongst a large field of riders who did not finish.
Aside from Mohoric’s gold and bronze medal, Govekar’s silver, and Zambanini’s bronze, Bahrain Victorious’ Dusan Rajovic, Kamil Gradek, and Yukiya Arashiro also came away with accolades from their ITT competitions. Rajovic won gold in the Serbian national championship, Gradek a silver in Poland, and Arashiro a bronze in Japan.
