MORE than 650 people and 150 teams took part in a two-day fishing competition organised by the Bahrain Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth) over the weekend.
Four types of fish – hamour (grouper), chanad (kingfish), sheri (emperor) and cobia – were caught as part of the Haddak competition held at Amwaj Marina and the Bahrain Yacht Club.
Twelve winners were announced, with the team catching the largest fish by size wining in each category regardless of the total catch amount.
The first place in the hamour category was won by Abdulla Al Thawadi (9.3kg), followed by Ghulam Jeelani (7kg) and Mansoor Nizar (6.2kg).
In the chanad category, Abdullah Shanaf (10.7kg) was placed first, followed by Mohammed Abdulrahman (9.9kg) and Fathi Ali (9.3kg).
Bader Abdulla’s catch of 2.9kg sheri won him first place. He was followed by Ahmed Al Jowder (2.5kg) and Ali Ibrahim (2.1kg).
Bader Abdulla also won in the cobia category with his catch weighing 20.1kg, followed by Abdul Abdulhussain (7.9kg) and Yasser Abdulrahman (4.5kg).
The competition organising committee expressed gratitude to all the participants in the main event of the seventh edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Season for Marine Heritage Sports, which confirms the pride in the professions practised by Bahraini men in the past.
The competition was launched years ago to revive traditional sea sports, and the aim is to preserve the pride and heritage of Bahraini sporting events.
This year the event started in August and continues until next month featuring sports dedicated to falcons, camels and horses.
