Mathieu Vigier Latour was just 24 years old when he took his own life after a beard transplant went horribly wrong.
Mathieu travelled to Istanbul, Turkiye last March, seeking a clinic for a beard transplant.
The clinic seemed credible online and had certification from the Turkish Health Ministry though it was later revealed that the so-called medical professional who performed the operation turned out to be a real-estate agent.
The procedure used skin grafts taken from the back of Mathieu’s head and transplanted on his face, which caused a great deal of pain afterwards and suffered burns which greatly affected his sleep.
The botched procedure resulted in inconsistent hair growth on his face in odd patchy shapes and unnatural angles. A Belgian specialist attempted to correct the procedure but said that his scalp would never recover in the patch where the grafts had been lost. Mathieu fell into deep depression and suffered from body dysmorphia, a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance, and eventually took his own life in his student accommodation.
His father now campaigns to improve awareness about the risks of inexpensive health tourism.
