Literary lovers in parliament are pressing for the Bahrain International Book Fair to be reborn as a major part of the kingdom’s burgeoning calendar of cultural and tourism initiatives.
Five MPs, led by the chairman of the financial and economic affairs committee and Strategic Thinking Bloc president Ahmed Al Salloom, have called for the event’s reinstatement.
The event last appeared in 2018 and Mr Al Salloom expressed disappointment over its disappearance describing it as a setback for Bahrain’s cultural prominence.
“It is shameful that it has been discontinued,” he said, emphasising that Bahrain was the first in the region to stage such an event.
He lamented that other regional cities, such as Riyadh, Sharjah and Doha, have since surpassed Manama by hosting major literary events that attract best-selling authors to talk of their works, thrilling book launches promoted by publishing houses, as well as attracting high-spending tourists from all over the world.
The MPs argue, in their proposal submitted to Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam yesterday, that bringing back the Bahrain International Book Fair would reaffirm the kingdom’s position as a pioneer in promoting literature, arts and intellectual exchange.
They pointed out that such events not only celebrate culture but also contribute significantly to the economy by attracting visitors helping to boost hotel occupancy and allow spin-off events such as literary lunches and ‘meet the author’ lectures and talks.
Mr Al Salloom highlighted the role they could also play in offering a platform to showcase Bahrain’s own literary talents.
He noted that the event’s absence has been deeply felt by authors, publishers and readers alike, many of whom appreciated its networking opportunities.
“Neighbouring countries have successfully leveraged their book fairs and literary events to draw international attention, attract visitors and boost their economies,” said Mr Al Salloom. “We need to reclaim our position and prove that Bahrain can still lead in hosting such prestigious events,” he added.
“The call to reinstate the book fair includes a proposal to integrate it into Bahrain’s annual tourism and exhibitions calendar starting in 2025.
“Its return could strengthen Bahrain’s reputation as a hub for cultural tourism and create opportunities for collaboration with regional and international publishers,” he added.
The proposal is expected to be discussed in Parliament, with the hope that relevant authorities will recognise the value of reviving the Bahrain International Book Fair.
