New smart cards with added security features that are designed according to the latest technologies and international standards will soon be issued to the public in Bahrain.
Citizens and residents who plan to renew their ID cards soon are advised to wait until their current card expires, provided there are no urgent circumstances requiring immediate renewal, announced the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) yesterday.
The authority clarified that limiting the renewal to only expired ID cards comes in line with the maintenance activities at the Customer Service Centre (Isa Town branch) which will take place until February 15 as the number of appointments are limited for card services due to the centre’s upgrading works. However, customers can easily complete their transactions using the eServices available on the National Portal, bahrain.bh.
The upcoming new revamped ID card will feature a range of enhancements and expanded capabilities for digital transactions. The introduction of the new ID card will mark a significant shift in card service delivery by incorporating biometric features, increased capacity, improved quality and utilising a newly developed printing system to support and reduce maintenance costs and government.
The initiative is part of the iGA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of the national ID card system and in line with the government directives and with the continuous follow-up of Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, and Ministerial Committee for Information and Communication Technology (MCICT) chairman.
