JUDO – BAHRAINI judokas Askerbii Gerbekov and Said Sadrudinov are set to compete this week in the World Judo Championships 2025 in Budapest, Hungary.
Gerbekov will be hitting the mat in the men’s 81kg category, while Sadrudinov will be battling for the podium in the men’s 100kg division.
Gerbekov will be kicking off his medal bid today in Pool C for the competition’s first round. His opening match is against Adrian Gandia of Puerto Rico. The winner will move on to the round of 32 where they will face Luan Almeida of Brazil, who has a bye in round one. They will be vying for spots in the round of 16 and then the quarter-finals, after which the semi-finals, repechage, bronze medal and gold medal matches will be held.
There are 45 competitors in all representing 39 nations in this weight class, which offers total prize money of EUR57,000.
Meanwhile, Sadrudinov will be in Pool C in his category, which will be held on Wednesday. His first opponent is Laurin Boehler of Austria in the first round, with the winner moving on to lock horns with Georgios Kroussaniotakis of Cyprus in the last 32.
The victor from their bout will then compete in the round of 16 and quarters, for spots in either the semi-finals or repechage round. The bronze medal and gold medal matches will follow.
Sadrudinov is part of a 42-judoka field from 32 nations in his division, which also offers EUR57,000 in total prize money.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Olympic Committee secretary general Faris Al Kooheji attended the world championships’ opening ceremony. He was joined by Bahrain Combat Sports Council vice-chairman and Bahrain Judo Federation (BJF) president Dr Faisal Kanoo, and BJF technical director Eldar Khan.
During their attendance, the Bahraini delegation met with International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer. Al Kooheji presented Vizer with a souvenir.
