A thief who was caught trying to steal a car outside a grocery store and was beaten up by its staff is now suing the store and its staff for his injuries in a Canadian court.
The man, who had 17 prior convictions for property offences, felt that the beating he received from the store's staff was too severe and unwarranted.
'The amount of force used against him was far in excess of what was necessary to execute a citizen’s arrest or detain him pending the arrival of law enforcement personnel,' his lawyer alleged.
'He suffers from constant fear, anxiety, apprehensiveness, depression and feelings of worthlessness as a result of the conduct of the defendants,' the lawyer added.
Eight store staff members allegedly pulled him out of a car he was trying to steal, after he stole a jacket that had its keys, then proceeded to punch and kick him, at one point allegedly attacking him with a hammer.
