ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S former Olympic champion Ruth Jebet climbed the podium for third place in the women’s race of the Mexico City Marathon Telcel in Mexico.
Jebet was part of a high-quality field of elite athletes competing in the run, which was a Gold-level event held as part of this year’s World Athletics Label Road Races.
Jebet completed the 42.2-kilometre race distance in two hours 32 minutes 47 seconds to secure her spot in the top three. She finished more than four minutes behind race winner Bekelech Gudeta of Ethiopia, who clocked a mark of 2:28:34, while Thalia Valdivia of Peru was the runner-up in 2:32:29.
Visiline Jepkesho and Mercy Kwambai, both of Kenya, completed the top five amongst the elite women in 2:34:53 and 2:35:23, respectively.
Jebet competed for only the second time this season in a major marathon. She had also run in Daegu, South Korea, last February, where she clocked a quicker mark of 2:25:43. The 28-year-old’s personal best in the discipline is 2:23:08, which she set in 2023.
Jebet was the gold-medallist in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Rio 2016 Olympics. She was also the under-20 world champion for the same event in 2014, and has also claimed various medals for the kingdom at the regional and continental levels, while also being crowned Diamond League champion twice in 2016 and 2017.
