TENNIS – TOP seed Ahmed Alsayed cruised into the boys’ singles quarter-finals yesterday in the Bahrain ATF 16U tournament, which is being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
The Bahraini youngster defeated Mohammed Alyami from Saudi Arabia 6-1, 6-1 in their round-of-16 clash to march through to the elite eight.
With the result, Alsayed set up an exciting clash with Saudi’s Abdulaziz Altamimi, the boys’ singles eighth seed. Altamimi claimed his own convincing victory yesterday, beating Choe Joseph from India 6-1, 6-0.
Also making it through to the quarters was third seed Talal Alsayed, who is also representing the kingdom. He defeated Saudi’s Mohammed Alnimr 6-2, 6-3 and now awaits his opponent in the last eight. It will be the winner of the match between seventh-seeded Saudi Ali Alahmad and his compatriot Hamoud Ibrahim.
Bahrain’s Hashim Altoobli made it to the quarter-finals following a walkover against second seed Daniel Carvalho from Brazil.
Fourth seed Ahmad Sarouji from Saudi and fifth seed Parth Sane from India also punched their tickets with both players overcoming Bahraini opposition. Sarouji beat Redha Hasan 6-2, 6-4 in their clash, while Sane claimed a tough 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win against Adam Bokhowa.
On the distaff, Bahrain’s Mariam Alabbasi and Saudi’s Fatima Albaajari both advanced to the girls’ singles semi-finals.
Fourth-seeded Alabbasi overcame fellow-Bahraini Haneen Alnajar 6-0, 6-4 in their round-of-eight showdown, while second-seeded Albaajari beat Sagarika Nayak of Bahrain 6-1, 6-0.
Alabbasi will next take on the winner of the match between top seed Salma Faragallah and Sophia Bader, both from Bahrain; while Albaajari will face either third seed Gharam Isa or Layal Basel, both of whom are also flying the kingdom’s flag in the tournament. Matches continue today at the BTF’s hard courts. All are welcome to attend and watch the action.
The ongoing Bahrain ATF 16U competition is the first of two successive Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) events for this age group that are being held in the kingdom. This tournament continues until Friday, after which another will be held from Saturday to October 17.
They are part of a series of exciting, high-level tennis championships that will be taking place in Bahrain over the next few months. These include international, continental, and regional levels.
